NJSTA 2015 Super Science Saturday

The New Jersey State Museum presented its 35th annual Super Science Saturday on May 9th this year.  As usual NJSTA members were present to help with the event.  This year's event featured more than 30 science, technology, engineering and educational groups from around the region including NJ Audubon Society, Jenkinson's Aquarium, NSS Philadelphia Area Space Alliance, NJSTA, Field Station Dinosaur, and many others. Highlights include STEM topics like 3-D printing and robotics demonstrations; a petting zoo to get up close with live farm animals; hands-on fossil and metorite exhibits; plus other activities and workshops.

Jim Messersmith used the principles of air presser to show children and their parents how to make water seem to defy gravity by staying in a jar even when the jar was turned upside down.

Mitch Batoff helped children and their parents explore the properties of optical illusions.

Angela Best helped students discover properties of surface tension by dropping water on a penny.

She also showed them how taking away the surface tension made the water behave differently when dropped on the penny.

Linda Smith helped children and their parents understand the important role air pressure plays in helping them move by taking away the air molecules around their body.  They discovered it is much harder to move when the pressure of air all around you is not there to help.  She also helped them make their own straw rockets to take with them.

Thanks NJSTA members for helping to inspire both children and their parents!   Being a member of NJSTA allows you to join in activities like this.  Nancy, Jim, Mitch, Angela and Linda inspired a lot of people that day.  Come out to our next event and help us inspire even more future scientists!
