Maitland P. Simmons was president of NJSTA from 1954-1955. He passed away in 1991. Upon his death 13 years later, his wife, Antoinette, left a bequest to NJSTA intended for scholarships in her husbands' name. The Scholarships shall be designated "The Maitland P. Simmons Memorial Award".

The NJSTA Citation Scroll is awarded to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to science and/or science education.

The NJSTA Fellows Program was inaugurated as an expression of esteem to those officers and members who give to the association of their time and talent to a degree not normally expected of them. Fellows are honored at our annual spring membership meeting.

The NJSTA Atkins Award was named for Pauline McDowell Atkins who became the first woman president of NJSTA in 1924 and who was leader in the development of science education in NJ. The Award, established in 1948, recognizes "outstanding cooperation with and service to the science teachers of the state of NJ". Over the years that the award has been presented, representatives of many major New Jersey companies have received the award.

John Petix, a former NJSTA president, fellow and Citation Scroll recipient, was an ardent supporter of NJSTA well after his presential term was finished. Edythe, his wife and a math department chair, provided much behind the scenes support for John, hence the title PETIX Supporter of Science Award. The NJSTA Petix Award shall be awarded to ono-members of NJSTA for extraordinary support and contribution to NJSTA.

NJSTA also confers Special Awards.
